PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh softball team hosts Rutgers in a three-game series at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex this weekend. Action begins on Saturday, April 30, with a doubleheader and concludes with a single game on Sunday, May 1. First pitch is set for noon on both days.
Pitt (28-14, 7-6 Big East) is coming off a 4-1 road trip with victories over Connecticut and St. John's. The Panthers scored 33 runs over the five-game span. Pitt also had a .299 team batting average, a .456 slugging percentage, and a .409 on-base percentage.
Junior Kelly Hmiel, who is in her first year at Pitt, is just two RBI shy of tying the single-season record of 44 set by Sam Card and Jess Dignon in 2008.
In addition, senior Reba Tutt is either within reach or holds both single-season and career school records in several categories. She is the program's record holder in runs scored (140) and walks (96), as well as the single-season leader in walks (40). Tutt is tied in single-season triples (5) and is two shy of tying the career mark of 15. In doubles, Tutt has 13 doubles this season, which is four behind Dignon's record of 17, while her 40 runs scored are three less than Dignon's 43 runs scored in 2008.
Others holding current school records are Ashley Amistade in stolen bases (72), Cory Berliner in career wins (48) and Alyssa O'Connell in win-loss percentage (.756).
Rutgers (18-25, 6-8 Big East) split its doubleheader against Villanova on Wednesday. Last season, the Scarlet Knight won the three-game series 2-1. However, the Panthers lead the all-time series 14-12.
