Softball Blanks Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Pitt’s softball team garnered its third consecutive shutout with a 3-0 victory over host Florida Atlantic in the Strikeout for Cancer Tournament held at FAU Softball Stadium. The Panthers improved to 7-2 on the year.
Pitt has held its opponents scoreless in the last 19 innings. The Panthers have also allowed just one run in the last 36 innings of action. In fact, seniors Cory Berliner and Alyssa O’Connell boast 1.00 ERAs, while the Panthers overall ERA is 1.19.
Freshman Karlyn Jones pitched the complete game, allowing eight hits and walking one in seven innings. Jones caught the last batter of the night looking and improved to 4-0 on the mound. She leads the pitching staff with two shutouts and has walked just two batters in 23.2 innings.
Tested in the fifth, Jones was faced with a runner on third and just one out on the board. She would then tally her fourth of five strikeouts in the game for the second out. Next, junior Yvette Bravo caught a foul ball to end the threat.
On the other side of the ball, Pitt was quick to put numbers on the board. With the first at-bat of the game, senior Reba Tutt recorded the first triple of the season for the Panthers. She then scored the winning run after tagging on a sacrifice hit to right field from sophomore Holly Stevens.
Tutt has scored five runs in the four games this weekend.
Pitt added another run in the third with a single to left field from Stevens. Her hit allowed senior Ashley Amistade, who led off the inning with a single, to score. This is the fifth of nine games this season Stevens has tallied multiple RBI in a contest. She leads the team with 13 RBI to date.
Later, in the fifth, senior Ashlyn Zellefrow scored her second run of the season for Pitt after replacing Stevens on base. Zellefrow rounded the diamond with sacrifice hits from juniors Kelly Hmiel and Niki Cognigni and a passed ball.
Amistade, Cheesebrew and Stevens were all 2-for-3 at the plate today. Additionally, Cheesebrew smacked a two-out triple in the fourth inning.
Florida Atlantic stranded nine runners on base.
The Panthers will face Maryland in the Championship game of the Strikeout for Cancer Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, at FAU Softball Stadium.
