PITTSBURGH – Three players scored in double figures to lead Pitt women’s basketball to a 59-51 win over Seton Hill in exhibition play on Friday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore Marquel Davis (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all scorers with 14 points. Redshirt sophomore Ashlee Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) had 11 points with nine of those coming in the second half, while freshman Brianna Kiesel (Utica, N.Y.) registered 10.
The Griffins were paced by Tiara Stossel and Paige Alviani with 11 points each.
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first three minutes of the game, hitting their first five-straight shots from the floor. Davis had eight of the 10 during the opening surge.
After the Griffins closed to two (11-9) on a jumper in the paint from Clare Berenato, Pitt used a three-point play from sophomore Kyra Dunn (Sacramento, Calif.) to – once again – make it a five-point contest at the 15:08 mark.
The teams traded field goals over the next 15 minutes of the period with neither team leading by more than three points. With Pitt holding a 24-23 edge, Seton Hill reeled off nine of the final 13 points of the half to take a 32-38 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers trailed by as many as seven points in two occasions in the second half, before piecing together a 15-7 run to take a 52-51 lead with 4:05 remaining. The run was highlighted by a trio of defensive plays that turned into offensive outputs. A steal and subsequent kiss off the glass from Kiesel closed the gap to 49-47 with 5:45 remaining.
After a Seton Hill basket, Anderson responded with a jumper from the left side and Kiesel converted an offensive put-back in traffic to give the Panthers a lead at 52-51 they would not relinquish. They closed the game by holding the Griffins scoreless over the final five minutes.
Dunn and freshman Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Pitt scored 36 of its 59 points in the paint, while tallying 23 points off of SHU miscues.
Pitt officially opens the 2011-12 season on Saturday, Nov. 12, hosting Hampton at 2 p.m.
