NORTH YORK, ONTARIO—One of the most decorated alumni members from the men’s swimming and diving team, Warren Barnes was named the recipient of the Bob Pirie Trophy. Selected and voted upon by the Ontario Swim Coaches Association, the award is given to the top male performer from Ontario.
“It was a tremendous honor to receive the award, because of its history,” Barnes said. “Everyone who has received this award has gone on to become an Olympian. It is a huge confidence boost for me going into the Olympic Trials and the Pan Am Games.”
As a member of the FINA World Champion Canadian Team, Barnes earned three top 25 finishes at the 2010 World Short Course Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last December. His best performance in that meet was a 15th-place finish in the 200 breast (2:07.89).
Barnes qualified for the FINA World Swimming Championships after claiming his first-ever Canadian National title in the 100 breast (1:02.07) during the 2010 Summer National Championships in July, 2010.
Barnes was named Pitt's Most Valuable Swimmer in 2008 after earning All-Big East honors in both the 100 and 200 breast stroke events.
Up next, Barnes will compete in the 2011 Pan American Games from Oct. 15-21 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
