STORRS, Conn. - The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team fell, 1-0, at No. 1 Connecticut on Saturday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies (13-0-1, 4-0-1 Big East) scored the game-winner in the 61st minute off a scramble in front of the goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Lee Johnston posted six saves for the Panthers (4-9-1, 2-3-0), including a few show stoppers to keep the game scoreless in the first half.
Pitt had its best opportunity to score in the 37th minute on a shot from Ryan McKenzie. The second year player took a bouncing ball from 20 yards out and drilled a low shot to the right side. The UConn goalie read it clean and dropped down, diving to make the stop.
The Huskies held a 9-5 edge in shots in the first period, but only had one on net in the opening 45 minutes.
In the 50th minute, Johnston stopped back-to-back shots attempts - the second a rebound - to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Allando Matheson broke open the scoreless game in the 61st minute with his third goal of the season. After a scramble a yard off the goal line, Matheson was able to scoot a loose ball through and give the Huskies the eventual game-winner.
The Panthers host Providence on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
