Leggs Records 20 Kills In Win

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senior Kiesha Leggs posted 20 kills as the University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Georgetown at McDonough Arena on Friday. The Panthers garnered the win with scores of 16-25, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20.
Pitt (12-5, 2-1 Big East) was led by Leggs with 20 kills in the match. Sophomore Monica Wignot chipped in 12 kills and four digs. Additionally, sophomore Brenea White put down seven kills.
On the defensive end, junior Alexa Campbell paced the Panthers with nine digs, while freshman Lindsey Zitzke collected seven.
Pitt rebounded from a first-set loss with a .423 hitting clip in the second game. Wignot tallied the first point of the contest when junior Margy Acton set her for a kill.
As play continued, the Panthers extended their advantage to 16-8 with a kill from freshman Mechael Guess. Pitt would close out the rally on a 9-6 run. Both White and Leggs were 5-for-5 offensively in the stanza. The Panthers limited the Hoyas (8-8, 0-3 Big East) to a .167 hitting percentage.
Later in the third set, Pitt recorded 13 kills to Georgetown’s eight. Zitzke gave the Panthers a 12-5 edge with an ace that forced the Hoyas to take a timeout.
Pitt pushed its lead to eight, 19-11, with a kill from Leggs. Zitzke tallied an assist on the play. The Panthers and Georgetown won six points each in final volleys. Leggs swung for a game-high seven kills in the contest. Zitzke collected 11 assists while adding two aces and two digs. Pitt took a 2-1 edge in the match as a result.
Next, Leggs accumulated half of the Panthers’ kills in the fourth set, posting an .875 attack percentage. She went 7-for-8 in the game. Defensively, Pitt held the Hoyas to .074 hitting in the final frame.
The opening set included three ties and two lead changes. The Panthers were held to just eight kills in the stanza. Zitzke tallied five assists and four digs in the first game.
Pitt tallied six blocks in the match, including three a piece from both junior Jasmine Dittrich and White.
The Panthers travel to Villanova on Sunday, Oct. 2, for a 2 p.m. contest. The Wildcats shut out West Virginia, 3-0, this evening.
