ATHENS, Ohio—In its first match of the day, the University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets to host Ohio, in the noon game of the Baymont Inn & Suites Invitational, held at the Convocation Center. The Panthers slipped to 1-7 on the year, while the Bobcats improved to 6-2 with scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-17.
Senior Amy Town recorded a team-high 10 kills in the match. She also chipped in five digs and an assist in the contest.
With seven kills in the match, senior Imani Harper surpassed 300 kills in her career. In 75 matches played, she has recorded 304 kills to-date.
Senior Alyssa King came off the bench in the first set and tallied 23 assists against the Bobcats.
Sophomore libero Margy Acton collected six kills in the two sets she played in, while senior Brittany Fallis added four.
Despite five tied scores, errors proved to be costly in the first set, as the Panthers recorded nine kills and were held to a .033 hitting percentage.
Later in the second game, Pitt picked up momentum and kept the contest close. A Bobcat error would tie the set at six. That play followed a kill from sophomore Jenn Katona the cut the Ohio lead to 6-5.
Unfortunately, the Bobcats would push ahead 16-10 and force a Pitt timeout. King would then set Katona for a kill during a 4-1 Pitt comeback.
Ohio would force another Panther timeout with two quick points and a 19-14 advantage. Pitt and Ohio traded points over the next few possessions, leading to an eventual 25-21 victory for the Bobcats.
Then, in the final set of the match, Pitt and Ohio were knotted with 12 kills apiece. However, the Bobcats would also out-block the Panthers 4-0.
Following an Ohio ace, Pitt took a timeout to regroup. At that time the Panthers trailed 14-8 in the third set. Pitt rallied a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 16-13. That run included an ace from sophomore Michelle Walker, her first of the season, and a Town kill that Walker assisted on.
Later, Ohio jumped back on top 23-15. Freshman Brittany Lhota would attack a long pass to hold off the Bobcats, but Ohio would win two of the next three ball and take the set with a score of 25-17.
Walker and Acton recorded three digs each in the third set.
The Panthers face Northwestern at 5 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
