Berliner Earns Nine Strikeouts in Loss

PITTSBURGH-Pitt's softball team dropped the first game of today's doubleheader, 8-0, against Syracuse, at Trees Field, this afternoon. The Panthers slipped to 24-21 on the year and 8-9 in the Big East, while the Orange improved to 28-20 overall and 10-7 in the league.
Pitt looked as if it would tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning, after sophomore Kristen Cheesebrew was hit by a pitch as the lead off. She then stole second and third base. However, Cheesebrew was later caught on a run down between third and home plate to end the threat.
Junior Cory Berliner (12-7) pitched 5.1 innings and caught a season-high nine batters on strikes. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits in the loss. In the fourth inning, Berliner struck out two batters, looking. The Panthers lead the league in strikeouts looking with over 90 on the year.
Senior Kayla Zinger faced five batters in relief and allowed two runs off two hits.
Syracuse scored its first run of the game in the third inning. They added another seven in the sixth off six hits to bring the game to an end.
Junior Ashley Amistade recorded a hit in the game.
