TAMPA, Fla.—Recording the split, Pitt’s softball team dropped a 5-1 contest to USF in the second game of its doubleheader, this afternoon, at USF Softball Field. The Panthers fell to 23-18 on the year and 7-6 in the Big East, while the Bulls slipped to 21-21 overall and 6-5 in the league.
Freshman Holly Stevens recorded her second RBI of the day in the fifth inning, as junior Ashley Amistade scored the lone run of the game for Pitt. Amistade was on base after collecting an infield single. She then moved to second with a fielder’s choice hit from junior Reba Tutt. Stevens then singled up the middle to send Amistade home.
Earlier, in the first inning, Stevens and Tutt were moved to second and third, respectively, with a sacrifice hit from sophomore Yvette Bravo. Unfortunately, both were left stranded as the next batter hit a line drive at the third baseman.
Junior Alyssa O’Connell (10-9) took the loss for the Panthers, giving up five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Senior Kayla Zinger entered the game and struck out three batters, while allowing one earned run off four hits.
USF scored two runs off a double in the bottom of the first off a double to right field. The Bulls added another run a few batters later to take a 3-0 advantage early in the game. USF then recorded single-run innings in the second and sixth innings.
Amistade went 2-for-3 with a run in the contest. Tutt was also 2-for-3.
The Panthers host Seton Hall in a three-game series starting Saturday, April 24, at noon.
