Pitt Baseball Sweeps Weekend At Palm Beach Classic

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team improved to 10-4 on the season with a three-game sweep of Fordham at the Palm Beach Classic over the weekend. The Panthers defeated the Rams 10-3, 13-0 and 10-1 with a game Saturday night and a doubleheader on Sunday.
Pitcher Nate Hood (Cleburne, Texas/North Texas Central) pitched one game on the week, but he gave up no runs on just two hits in 8.0 innings of work against Fordham in a 13-0 victory on Sunday. Also with a strong day on the mound was Corey Baker (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), who led Pitt to a 10-1 win on Saturday, pitching a complete game. Baker gave up just one run on six hits, while striking out six in the win.
In the three games against Fordham, Pitt out-scored the Rams 33-4 for three commanding wins. Danny Lopez (Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) paced the team with six runs batted in, and six runs scored on the weekend.
On the week in the state of Florida, including their 10-7 loss at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, junior Joe Leonard went 9-for-19 for a .474 average. In addition, Leonard (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville) drove in five runs while scoring four of his own, three doubles, a triple and a home run.
Pitt will open up its home schedule Tuesday, March 16 at 3 p.m. with a single mid-week game against Youngstown State at Trees Field. On the weekend, Pitt travels to Philadelphia for three games against St. Joseph's, LaSalle and Temple on March 19, 20 and 21.
