Softball Earns A One-Run Victory

CLEARWATER, Fla.—Pitt scored all six of its runs in one inning, as the Panthers earned a 6-5 victory over Drake in their second game of the USF Under Armour Classic, held at Eddie C. Moore Field. The Panthers improved to 7-8 overall.
In the second inning, Pitt tallied six runs off two hits and two Drake errors. Junior Reba Tutt drove in the first run for the Panthers, as sophomore Niki Cognigni scored. Cognigni was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.
Next, with the bases juiced, sophomore Ciera Damon was walked and classmate Jessica Rhodunda was sent home. Senior Megan Livesey and Tutt were the next to score, before Cognigni singled to left field for two RBI. Sophomore Kristen Cheesebrew and junior Ashley Amistade scored on the play.
Cognigni led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run. She also added four assists in the game. Additionally, Tutt went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run.
The Panthers were out-hit 10-5 in the contest. Drake scored first with two runs in the opening stanza. They scored again in the third with a homer and then used a double to drive in another two in the sixth inning.
Junior Cory Berliner (4-2) earned the win in the circle. She gave up nine hits, while striking out five.
Pitt faces Maine on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
