BOCA RATON, Fla.—A late inning rally lifts Pitt’s softball team to a 4-2 victory over Minnesota in its final game of the Florida Atlantic Invitational. The Panthers improved to 2-3 on the year.
Trailing in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Kristen Cheesebrew got the offense going when her groundball allowed senior Megan Livesey to score. Livesey was on base after taking a lead-off walk.
Then, an infield single from sophomore Amanda Heitmeier sent junior Ashley Amistade in for the tying run.
Finally, sophomore Yvette Bravo’s single to center field drove in two runs, giving Pitt the advantage. Freshman Holly Stevens tallied the winning run, while Cheesebrew added on a buffer.
In the top of the seventh, junior Alyssa O’Connell recorded a strikeout and two infield ground balls to secure the win for the Panthers. In two innings of work, O’Connell faced just six batters.
Minnesota jumped on the board first with two runs in the opening stanza. Those runs came as a result of two, two-out errors and two singles.
Junior Cory Berliner earned the start on the mound, allowing seven hits and one earned run. The Golden Golphers threatened to score in the fifth inning with two one-out singles, however, Berliner got out of the frame with a pop up and a foul out.
Amistade was 2-for-3 with a run and four putouts in the game.
Pitt travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the two-day North Carolina Invitational on Friday, Feb. 27.
