CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Pitt’s softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 23 North Carolina in its second game of the Tar Heel Invitational, held at Anderson Field. The Panthers fell to 2-5 on the season, while UNC improved to 9-3.
Pitt was shutout at the plate for the first time this season, as the Tar Heels out-hit the Panthers 6-0.
Junior pitcher Alyssa O’Connell allowed six runs off six hits, while walking three and catching one on strikes. In the third inning, O’Connell retired all three of the batters faced.
However, after five innings, senior Kayla Zinger took over the pitching duties and gave up two runs, walked six and struck out three batters in her two innings.
Defensively, Pitt kept North Carolina off the scoreboard in the second inning as tow runners were left on base. Later in the seventh, with bases loaded an infield ground ball ended the Tar Heels threat of adding runs to the board.
The Panthers face James Madison at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
