Pitt versus Mount St. Mary's
Quoting Head Coach Agnus Berenato
Opening Statement:
"I would like to say thank you all for being here. It’s been a long day with the football game, the men’s game and now here with us. I’d like to take this time to introduce my guest coach Everett James, our vice chancellor here at the university, along with his lovely wife and two daughters. We wish them great success and thank them for what they’ve done for the state of Pennsylvania; it’s been fabulous and we thank them so much for flying in for this game. You guys are now 1-0 here.”
“I’m really excited with the team effort. Everybody played and everybody scored. We had a low number of turnovers in the first half, the lowest we’ve had in a very long time. We set a new Petersen Events Center record tonight with 14 steals. We shot 40 percent and held them to 22 percent. I was really impressed with our defense, especially in the second half. We held them scoreless for a really long time and we were just playing smart. We’ve been working on screens, splits, over-and-unders and throughs, and today it started to come together. I was really happy for Harrison, Logan and Davis because Mount St. Mary’s is right in their back yard. Logan wasn’t even recruited and she had a break-out game tonight. This is the first time she has played the three position, as opposed to usually playing the four for us all year and there’s really a huge different between those. We told her just yesterday at practice that she needed to play the three and there was a lot to learn. If she didn’t know it all, then she faked it really.”
On the defense:“I took the 1-2-2 defense off at about the 12-minute mark in the second half because I felt like we needed to work more on our man-to-man. We just really D’d up and went number-to-number with a good pressure defense.”
On breaking the Petersen Events Center record of steals in a game:“Records are made to be broken. I hope Tuesday night we break it again and get 15. We haven’t been risk-takers enough and I’m a risk taker. I’m always telling the team to be more aggressive, think two passes ahead and anticipate steals. I was happy tonight that we were really going after their passes and shooting the gaps in the passing lanes.”
On playing against her alma-mater:“I was nervous. There were two schools here today that are really near my heart. Rider, who our men played, was my second coaching job. They gave me a big opportunity and I’m forever indebted to them. It was hard for me because I actually did half-time radio for Rider. I have a lot of old memories there. Then the Mount, they are my heart. I met my husband and the father of my kids there and it’s a fabulous school. But in the end, my paycheck comes from Pitt and I bleed blue and gold. The only thing I told the team this morning was that Mount St. Mary’s would use everything against me because I played there and was on the Board of Trustees for a long time. But I’m not there, I’m here. So I thought there was extra pressure on me, but not the team.
On the freshman stepping in:
“I thought that Davis did a fabulous job in the first half. She was very assertive and aggressive. She was not timid or afraid, and she was on the ball. In the second half it really was wonderful to watch Logan play. She has been on our gold team, the scout team, because she is so athletic. We need here there. However, I think neither of them would have succeeded without the help of our seniors. Harrison was the calming influence for us and did a great job. She took over at point for at times and was smart. I think that’s what a team is all about, upper-classman helping your under-classman.”
Quoting Pitt’s Asia Logan:
On her play:
“Coach always says have a presence, so when I came in I felt I did.”
