PITTSBURGH--Members of the University of Pittsburgh softball team participated in the Lawrenceville Garden Clean Up community service project last week.
In conjunction with the third annual Pitt "Make a Difference Day," the Panthers helped restore and clean gardens and grass areas around Lawrenceville, Pa. They assisted in removing trash, planting new flowers and brightening the community as a whole.
"The Lawrenceville Clean Up was a great opportunity for our team to come together in a non-competitive environment," senior pitcher Alyssa O'Connell said. "Not only was our team able to spend time together and build on our chemistry, but we were also able to make a difference in the community surrounding Pitt's campus. Seeing how appreciative and responsive members of the neighborhood were was very rewarding. "
The Pitt "Make a Difference Day" presents an opportunity for more than 3,000 Pitt students to give back to the Greater Pittsburgh Area with the motto, "The City is our Campus." The program provides a way for students to enhance and further their roles as student leaders by increasing campus wide volunteerism and participation.
The team participates in various events and programs throughout the year, trying to make a difference not only in Pittsburgh, but also in the surrounding communities.
