INDIANOLA, Pa. – The Pitt men’s soccer team fell to BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown, 1-0 Wednesday night at Founders Field. The Panthers drop to 6-6-2 on the year and 1-3-2 in the BIG EAST. The win continues a seven- game win streak for Georgetown, improving their record to 9-4-1 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play.
The contest marks the last men’s soccer game at Founders Field, and the first loss for the Panthers at home for the 2010 season. They were previously undefeated at Founders Field with a 5-0-1 record on the year.
In a tightly contested match, both teams exchanged numerous scoring opportunities.
Georgetown had it’s best chance to capture a lead in the 15th minute when a header off of Andy Riemer bounced off the inside post of the Pitt goal cage. Pitt goalkeeper Hami Kara quickly gained control of the bounce to prevent a Georgetown goal.
Despite the presence of the sturdy Georgetown defense, the Panthers maintained strong offensive pressure. A corner kick from Shane Flowers gave the Panthers their best scoring opportunity of the half. Several players gained possession of the ball, but could not manage to find the back of the net before it was turned over by a Hoya defender.
At halftime, both teams entered the locker room without registering a point on the board.
With 13 minutes left in regulation Georgetown’s Seth C’DeBaca crossed the ball from the lower right corner of the field. His initial pass grazed past the fingers of Kara and across the Panther goal. At the edge of the box, Jose Colchao gained possession of the loose ball, and fired it into the back of the net from ten yards out for the 1-0 lead.
With one minute remaining Pitt’s Ryan Brode fired the ball into the box from the left corner of the field. Freshman Alex Harrison found the ball in the middle of the box and headed it toward the goal, but was denied by Georgetown’s goalkeeper Matthew Brutto to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Pitt outshot Georgetown 9-6 throughout the game.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 24 when they travel to Rhode Island to face conference opponent Providence at Glay Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
The Panthers will conclude their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 with a home contest against Connecticut at North Allegheny High School. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
