Cowsette Earns 600M Run Title

URBANA-CHAMPAGNE, Ill.—Junior Dontave Cowsette won the 600M run title, as Pitt’s men’s track and field team finished second overall with 104 points at the Carle/Health Alliance Classic, hosted by Illinois at the U of I Armory indoor facility. Several other Panthers posted ECAC and Big East qualifying standards.
Cowsette won the 600M run with a two-second lead of 1:20.42. Later, Cowsette was also a member of the 4x400M relay that placed second, while qualifying for the IC4A meet at 3:18.97. The relay team was made up of sophomores Elliot Rhodes, Jerome Lowery, Cowsette and Jermaine Lowery.
Jermaine Lowery paced the squad in the open 400M dash, placing fifth with a Big East qualifying time of 49.78. Also competing in the 400M dash, Jerome Lowery and Kevin Wilbank recorded seventh and 10-th place finishes, respectively.
Challenged in the finals, junior Antony Hobwana improved upon his first-place prelim time of 6.84 and placed second in the event with an IC4A time of 6.83. Additionally, senior Sam Perkins sneaked into the IC4As with a 6.97 finish in the finals of the same event.
Later, Hobwana qualified for the Big East meet in the triple jump (13.42), and placed seventh in the long jump.
Also earning an IC4A automatic berth, sophomore Greg Kareis placed second in the mile run with a time of 4:13.57.
Freshman Caleb Matthews qualified for the Big East Championship, claiming second in the long jump (6.75).
Improving upon his prelim finish, freshman transfer Tashaun Hill was third in the 60M hurdles and posted an IC4A qualifying time of 8.21 in the event.
Posting third-place performances in the high jump and long jump, sophomore Ijelu Folarin qualified for the conference championship meet in the high jump with a leap of 1.99M.
Next, junior Garrett Larkin threw an IC4A distance of 15.97 in the shot put for third in that event, and was fifth in the weight throw with a Big East toss of 16.44. Sophomore Kevin Barnhart also posted a conference meet mark, placing seventh in the weight throw.
Additionally, newcomer Ben Hatch added to the Panthers’ lineup in the middle distance events with a fourth-place performance in the 600M run.
Freshman Wesley Washington would also record a fourth-place finish in the 800M run, while sophomore Idris Kasumu turned in a ninth-place performance in the 200M dash and was 16th in the 400M dash.
Pitt will travel back to State College, Pa. on Friday, Jan. 29, for the two-day PSU National Open.
