Pitt's Talucci Wins All-Around In Season-Opener

Pitt’s Alicia Talucci earned the all-around title as she led the Panther gymnastics team to a 190.550 in a tri-meet against Kent State and West Virginia Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House. The Mountaineers scored a 192.425 and Kent State recorded a 190.625 for second.
Talucci (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) scored a 38.750 in the all-around, highlighted by a 9.800 on the beam which also was tops among all gymnasts.
After the first rotation, the Panthers sat in second with a 48.400 on the vault with freshman Meaghan Biros (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) leading the way for Pitt with a 9.750. The Mountaineers held the slight lead with a 48.625 after their first rotation on the floor and Kent State stood in third with a 47.075 on the beam.
For the second rotation of the night, the Panthers scored a 47.900 on uneven bars with Jen Liberato (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scoring a team-best 9.650.
After three, West Virginia held the lead with a 144.650, while Kent State stood second at 143.500 and Pitt was third at 143.225. On the beam, Talucci’s 9.800 was followed up by Sarah Thompson’s (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) 9.675 for the Panthers.
On the fourth rotation, Talucci again led Pitt with a 9.650 on the floor while Shannon Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) posted the second-highest score with a 9.600.
Pitt returns to action Friday, Jan. 22 with a dual meet against Ohio State at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
