POST-GAME QUOTES
January 10, 2010, Petersen Events Center
Rutgers 52, No. 22 Pitt 46
Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato
Opening Statement...
“Congratulations to Rutgers. They played a hard fought game, both teams did. We got caught up playing their kind of style; scoring in the ‘50s kind of playing. We didn’t want that. They took away our running game and they had good defense. The slowed down the whole game and there were many stops and interruptions so we couldn’t find the flow of the game.”
On Taneisha Harrison...
“I thought Taneisha Harrison was a bright spot for the team today. She fought hard for her 13 points.”
On shot clock violations...
“The shot clock doesn’t matter. We had plays planned and they took our shots away. Someone had to step up and take the shots. It looked like no one wanted to step up and take them. Also, not boxing out on the free throw line really hurt us. Right now we are making the mistakes, we know we shouldn’t make and losing.”
On having the week off...
“I think losing always makes you look forward to your next game. It will be a long wait. The time off will be a good thing for the team because they’ll have time to work on things. Our next game is West Virginia and we just played them, so they are fresh in our minds. We have a lot of time to regroup and prepare. We have 13 conference games and we have to get wins. But we are going to focus on one game at a time.”
Jania Sims
On the pace of the game...
“We just settled for their pace of the game. Rutgers emphasizes defense, they slow down the game and value their possessions. We had a spark at the beginning of the game and then got passive. Rutgers is an aggressive defensive team and they protect their basket. Our guards could have drove to the basket like theirs did, but we didn’t and that was the difference.”
On playing close games...
“Most of our games have been close loses or wins. We have to play hard until the end. We are doing things wrong that we know are wrong. Coach says we need to do little things to make big things happen and we need to start doing the little things again.”
Rutgers Head Coach C. Vivian Stringer
On Brittany Ray...
Normally Brittany Ray shoots three’s better. She struggled quite a bit today, really quite a bit today, so it’s great that we were able to win because, unfortunately the perimeter, everybody else was on the perimeter. April Sykes had a great game. But the key here was that Brittany was hitting foul shots. She was trying to get to the line, and they were all over her. They [Pitt] have a great player in Pepper Wilson; they have a lot of great players. I think that we won ugly, but I don’t care, as long as we win.
On knowing that this is how the game would go...
I would have liked to win any other way. I would have liked for someone to hit. When Brittany Ray goes and you put Erica Wheeler in there to help Brittany, Erica’s not hitting, Brittany’s not hitting and Khadijah Rushdan is trying to get to the gap, so who else do we have?
