INDIANOLA, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to the visiting DePaul Blue Demons, 1-0 here tonight at Founder’s Field in Big East Conference action.
The Panthers (1-7-0, 0-3-0 Big East) offense came out strong in the first half outshooting the Blue Demons (5-3-0, 2-1-0 Big East) 7-4 but could not capitalize on two corner kicks, heading into the locker room tied 0-0 at the end of the first half.
DePaul took an early 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half when Antonio Aguilar sent a crossing pass from the far left side to Steffen Vroom, who headed the ball past freshman goalkeeper Keegan Gunderson (Circle Pine,Minn/Shattuck-St. Mary’s).
The Blue Demon offense took a page out of the Pitt first half offensive strategy, controlling possession for much of the second half. DePaul had several scoring opportunities midway through the half and registered eight corner kicks in the second half alone.
The Panthers offense challenged late in the second, registered multiple shots on goal but the Blue Demon defense was able to keep Pitt at bay, securing the 1-0 victory.
Pitt will be in action next on Sunday Sept. 27, as they host the University of South Florida Bulls. Game time is set for 1p.m. at Founder’s Field.
