Women's Volleyball Earns a Shutout Victory Over MES

PITTSBURGH—On the second day of the Pitt Blue Gold Tournament, Pitt’s women’s volleyball team defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0, with scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13. The Panthers improved to 7-6 with their second consecutive win of the invitational, while the Hawks slipped to 9-5 on the year.
Senior Meagan Dooley and junior Amy Town led the Panthers with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. On the defensive end, senior Michelle Rossi collected a match-high 13 digs.
Pitt recorded seven blocks to Maryland-Eastern Shore’s three, while holding the Hawks to just .193 hitting in the contest.
Freshman Jenn Katona earned the start for the Panthers as a middle hitter and recorded two block assists and one kill in the opening set.
As a team, the Panthers hit .324 in the first game and sophomore Allyson Hodnik collected 14 assists on 16 Pitt kills. Dooley led the squad, tying a set-high five kills off a .571 hitting percentage.
In the second set, the Panthers trailed MES 20-19 and called a timeout to regroup. Dooley tied the set at 22 with a hit over the middle. On the next play, the Hawks lost communication with their hitters and gave the Panthers a 23-22 advantage. Pitt would hold on for the 25-23 victory and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Pitt jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set, following back-to-back block assists from Katona and senior Melissa Stadelman.
Later, sophomore Alyssa King set freshman Michelle Walker to give Pitt a 16-7 advantage. Walker and Dooley would then record a block assist on the next play.
Freshman Alexa Campbell set up match point with a kill from the outside. The Panthers would then take the set and match off another communication mishap from MES.
Pitt will return for the final match of the Blue Gold Tournament at 5 p.m. against Youngstown State.
