Women's Volleyball Earns Four-Set Victory

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team ended its losing skid with a 3-1 victory over Valparaiso in the second match of the Blue Gold Tournament, held at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers won the match in four sets with scores of 19-25, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23, improving to 6-6 on the season, while the Crusaders slipped to 7-5 on the year.
Senior Meagan Dooley led Pitt with 20 kills and seven blocks, while juniors Amy Town and Imani Harper recorded 16 and 11 kills, respectively.
Additionally, sophomore Allyson Hodnik tallied 48 assists on the 52 Pitt kills, while senior Michelle Rossi collected 15 digs, in the contest.
The Panthers got on the board with a 25-18 win in the second set, after dropping the first set. In the second contest, Pitt held Valparaiso to a .054 hitting clip. Both Town and Dooley recorded four kills, while freshman Lauren Hartman went 3-for-4 hitting .750 in the game.
Dooley then recorded seven kills in the fourth set and Harper posted a .750 hitting percentage, leading the Panthers to a 25-20 victory.
In the fourth set, Dooley collected two of the three Pitt blocks. In the game, the Panthers out-blocked Valparaiso 13.5-4 and boast 120 team blocks on the season.
Town also chipped in two service aces in the final set.
Tournament action continues on Sunday, as the Panthers face Maryland-Eastern Shore at 1 p.m. on Sunday, prior to playing Youngstown State at 5 p.m. Valparaiso defeated the Hawks, 3-0, in the first match of the Blue Gold Tournament, this afternoon.
