ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Junior Amy Town recorded a match-high 11 kills in the first match of the Comcast Challenge, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest to Baylor this afternoon, at the Johnson Center on New Mexico’s campus. The Panthers fell to 5-4 on the season, while the Bears improved to 9-0 with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-18.
Town tallied 11 kills in the match and recorded a match-high with two service aces. She also collected five digs, while senior Michelle Rossi led the squad with 12 digs.
As a team, the Panthers were held to a .084 hitting clip and were out-blocked, 9-6.
In the first set there were eight ties and three lead changes between the Bears and Panthers. However, Pitt committed 10 hitting errors and were out-blocked, 4-0, in the contest.
Town and senior Meagan Dooley recorded three kills in the set, while Rossi collected three digs.
Next, in the second set, Town would record her second ace of the match to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead. Later, after one of the five lead changes in the second game, sophomore Rachel Kalberer would tie the set at 9-9 with a kill from the outside.
The score was then knotted again at 14, but a kill from Town would give the Panthers a slight 15-14 advantage. However, the Bears would then take the eventual lead in the set and pull away with a 5-0 run.
Later, the Panthers trailed 12-8 in the third set, before Dooley recorded a solo block in the middle of the net. A few plays later, Kalberer and Dooley combined on a stuff and cut the lead to 13-10.
Pitt recorded three consecutive blocks, during a 5-0 run to cut into a Baylor lead, 16-15, and force a timeout in the third set. During that rally, sophomore Allyssa King recorded a solo block and assisted Dooley on the other two.
Baylor, on the other hand, came out of the timeout and pushed the lead to 23-17, before junior Imani Harper would record one of her five kills in the match. The Bears then won the next two points and took the match, 3-0.
The Panthers face Cal State Fullerton at 7:15 p.m. ET, this evening.
