PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team travels to Bethesda, Md. this weekend, May 2-3, for a three-game set with the Georgetown Hoyas. The Panthers will play their second straight Saturday doubleheader in Big East Conference play, splitting a pair against Rutgers last weekend. First pitch for game one is slated for 4 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
The Hoyas enter this weekend’s series with the Panthers having dropped eight of their last 10 games. Georgetown’s 15-4 win over Norfolk State on April 28th was just the second win in the past month. Last weekend the Hoyas were swept by Seton Hall, losing 2-0 in game one, 6-0 in game two and 6-5 in game three.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s doubleheader will mark the 65th and 66th games in the all-time series that dates back to 1939. Pitt holds a 41-23 lead in the series and has not dropped a series to the Hoyas in nearly 20 years.
SINKING SHIPS
The Panthers downed Cleveland State 10-0 on Wednesday, April 29th. The win marked the third shutout of the season for Pitt. Frank Mercurio drove in a game-high four RBI while Kevin Dooley picked up his fourth win of the season after scattering four hits over five innings of work. Ricky Breymier, Corey Baker, Nate Reed and Nathan Hood all got in an inning of work, facing a combined 14 batters, just two over the minimum.
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY
Pitt’s scheduled game against Penn State on Tuesday, April 28 was cancelled after three innings of play due to rain. It was the seventh time this season the Panthers have had to cancel or postpone a scheduled game due to inclement weather and the third time alone against Penn State.
