PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Pittsburgh sophomore Danny Lopez was named the Big East Conference’s Player of the Week for the period ending April 20. Starting pitcher Corey Baker was also honored by the Big East, being named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Lopez hit .600 and slugged 1.000 to lead the Panthers to a three-game sweep of Seton Hall – the Panthers’ first series sweep in Big East play since the 2007 season. He was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a sacrifice bunt in the opener, went 2-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base and two RBIs in the second game and was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the finale. Lopez helped the Panthers gain two places in the Big East standings.
Baker was honored for the second time this season by the Big East after a stellar outing against the Pirates on Saturday, April 18. He tossed his second complete game of the season in a 5-2 win, scattering five hits and struck out six to help keep Pitt alive in the hunt for a Big East Championship.
The Panthers will be off this week for final exams, but return to action this coming weekend against Rutgers. Pitt will host the Scarlet Knights in doubleheader action on Saturday, April 25. First pitch at Trees Field is slated for 1 p.m.
