Softball Drops 2-1 Decision to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Providence in game one of its doubleheader this afternoon, at Raymond Field. Pitt slipped to 20-22 on the year and 6-13 in the Big East, while the Friars improved to 14-28 overall and 6-8 in the league.
Freshman Amanda Heitmeier tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, after Providence’s infield muffled a groundball from shortstop Niki Cognigni. Heitmeier lead-off with a single to left field in the frame. She was 3-for-3 with a run in the game.
Providence scored it first run in the second inning off a solo homer. The Friars then ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run off three Pitt errors.
The Panthers left seven runners on base and recorded five hits in the game. Sophomore Cory Berliner pitched the loss, giving up seven hits while striking out three in the game.
