Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato Opening Statement:
“I thought that in the first half we started off really slow but our press was excellent. We forced them into 18 turnovers but I wasn’t happy with our conversions. The second half we definitely picked up our pace and intensity and that’s the type of team I like to see. We want to get out and run, we want to take the open shot and go inside when we have the opportunity. I thought that I saw some of these things in the second half. Chelsea Cole did a good job around the basket scoring wise and Shayla Scott did a good job of following her shots. This was a double win for us; it was a win on the court making us 1-0 and as far the School Day promotion, it was a good display of athletics and academics, and that’s what we are about.”
On rebounding...
“In the second half it was there, but in the first half we were extremely disappointed. I tracked our rebounds and there were ones in our hands that we didn’t come out with; those are the type of rebounds we need to come up with. This is something we addressed at halftime.
On playing together...
“You have to realize Jania Sims hasn’t played for a year and a half, Selena hasn’t really played with this crew and Chelsea wasn’t a starter. Shayla Scott is the only starter returning. In the past we’ve always had Shavonte Zellous and Xenia Stewart to take over and we haven’t found that yet. We’ve been very hard on this team because we see great things and where we can go in the future. We can go with different combinations and we can pick up the speed.”
Chelsea Cole
On playing as team...
“I think that we got better looks over the defense by being taller, but in the first half we didn’t capitalize on our rebounds.”
Shayla Scott
Getting to know each other as a team...
“It goes back to our workouts over the summer and playing pick up every day. Getting used to one another is something that will come along very soon, it has to. We need to develop this throughout practice with patience.”
On importance of playing well defensively...
“Our defense creates our offense because when we make defensive plays, it feeds our offense. It makes us excited and allows the game to flow better. It feels good and it’s something we need to get used to in order to play better.”
