STORRS, Conn. — The University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team dropped its seventh Big East Conference match of the season, 2-0, against the University of Connecticut Huskies here tonight at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The 10th-ranked Huskies (8-2-3, 6-1-1 Big East) were propelled by two second half goals in their sixth conference win of the season.
Connecticut outshot the Panthers (1-11-1, 0-7-1 Big East) 14-1 in the first half, including 3-1 in corner kicks. Despite the offensive pressure from the Huskies, senior keeper Zack Matthews (Plum, Pa./Plum) made saves on both UConn shots on goal in the first period, taking a 0-0 tie into the locker room at half.
Connecticut took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the second half when a Carlos Alvarez cross to the middle of the field was drilled to the left side of the goal by Mike Pezza. The Huskies made it 2-0 in the 82nd minutes when Kwame Watson-Siriboe sent a shot from the left side past Matthews. Alvarez and Thomas Wharf were credited with the assist.
Matthews finished the night with six saves. The Pitt offense tallied just two shots on goal for the game and were outshot 24-6.
The Panthers will take a break from Big East Conference action, hosting Cleveland State next on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Founders Field. The game will mark a three-match home stand for the Panthers and is slated for a 7 p.m. start time
