PITTSBURGH -
As a continuation of Pitt’s Fall Ball, the Panthers are holding their inter-squad Navy and Gold World Series. In game one, Gold defeated Navy 5-1 in six innings of play.
Pitching was outstanding in the contest with three pitchers from each team taking the mound. The Gold victory also featured a strong effort by both squads in the defensive-minded scrimmage.
Gold jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kevan Smith’s sacrifice fly brought home Danny Lopez, who had doubled to lead off the game. Navy quickly tied it up in the second inning, however on a Steve Shelinksy solo home run. The rookie’s homer would be the only run Navy would score on the night.
The Gold team’s bats took advantage of their outstanding defensive performance as freshman Devin McLaughlin scored off a Dan Phister RBI single to take the 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Travis Whitmore drove the score to 4-1 with a two-run home run , and again added to the tally with an RBI single in the top of the sixth to take the 5-1 lead over Navy.
For Gold, Ryan Dunford contributed 1.0 innings of work, giving up one run. Corey Baker earned the win on 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit. Josh Smith pitched the final 0.2 innings, as the trio combined to give up just three hits and one run in six innings.
Navy had a solid performance from Matt Iannazzo, who pitched 2.0 innings and gave up just one hit and one run. Kevin Dooley gave up one run off on one hit in 2.0 innings and freshman Lucas Ellex suffered the loss for the Navy team.
Pitt will play game two of their preseason World Series on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Trees Field.
