KENT, Ohio — The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team dropped three straight bouts to open its dual against the 24th ranked Golden Flashes of Kent State University, eventually falling 27-3 to KSU.
Kent State took nine of ten matches from the Panthers on the night, including all three which featured two ranked opponents for its second consecutive win over Pitt.
Pitt (3-6, 3-0 EWL) got on the board with senior Mark Powell’s 5-2 decision over Jeremy Depoy in the 149-pound contest. Kent, however, rebounded to win the final six matches, running away with the victory.
The Panthers pick up EWL action next Saturday, Feb. 7 when the host rival West Virginia in the mat edition of the Backyard Brawl. The Panthers will honor Brad Gentzle, Powell and Zach Sheaffer as the seniors take the mat for the final time at home. Action at Fitzgerald Field House commences at 7 p.m.
