INDIANOLA, Pa.—Villanova scored on an indirect kick in the 101st minute to defeat the Pitt Men’s Soccer 1-0 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Founders Field.
The loss drops Pitt to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Big East play. The win improves Villanova’s record to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Big East play.
Pitt’s defense played another stellar game and had three scoreless periods until a foul in the first minute of the second overtime gave Villanova its indirect kick. Danny Demasters set up Adam Brazitis for a shot and when Pitt’s goalkeeper Jordan Marks went for the save, the ball took an unlucky bounce off a Pitt defender and went the other way into the left corner of the goal. Demasters was credited with an assist on the play.
Sunday’s match marks the fourth overtime game the Panthers have played this season. Prior to today, the Panthers were 2-0-1 in overtime.
Pitt’s defense has only allowed one goal in its previous four games. It has yielded only four goals on the year. Pitt also held opponents scoreless in 12 consecutive periods until Villanova ended the streak in double overtime.
The Wildcats outshot the Panthers 15-7 in the game and 10-4 combining the second period and overtime.
Next up, the Panthers will travel to South Florida. The game is scheduled for Friday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Tampa.
