LEXINGTON, Ky.--Head coach Toby Rens of the women's volleyball team, earned his first win at the helm of the Panthers with a 3-1 decision over Western Carolina this evening, in their final game of the Kentucky Classic. Pitt won the match with scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-19.
Rens led Pitt (1-2) to the victory while holding Western Carolina (0-4) to a .171 hitting percentage in the match. Rens also guided the offense in a way that two Panthers recorded double-doubles, as senior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) tallied 15 digs and 13 kills and classmate Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) added 38 assists and 11 digs in the match.
In the first set of the match, the Panthers were victorious as Taurence set three teammates for four kills, apiece. Later Pitt took a 2-1 advantage in the contest after the third set with a match-high .375 hitting clip. That contest remained close through each team's first 20 points, resulting in nine ties and two lead changes. Campbell and sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) each had five kills in the third set.
Dooley posted 12 kills and seven blocks in the match, while senior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) also totaled 12 kills.
In the match-winning fourth set, Pitt and Western Carolina tied one another 13 times. However in the end it was two stuff blocks from the Panthers that won the set. On the final play, Taurence and Dooley assisted one another, securing the win at 25-19.
The Panthers make their debut at Fitzgerald Field House on Sept. 5 & 6, as Pitt hosts the Pitt Classic.
