PITTSBURGH--Pitt salutes its six seniors on Senior Day as the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 23 DePaul in the first game of today's doubleheader at Trees Field. The Panthers fell to 30-24 on the season and 11-10 in the Big East, while the Blue Demons improved to 45-15 on the year and 16-5 in the league.
Prior to the game, seniors Jessica Dignon, Mary Hecker, Valerie Mihalik, Kelly Murphy, Kelly Stiles and Rebecca Stottlemyer were honored as they opened the day of their final doubleheader at Trees Field. Recording 108 wins to date in their four years, these seniors have earned three Big East Championship berths, recorded Pitt's first-ever vote in a national poll and earned four wins over ranked teams, including three out of five this season.
The Panthers recorded their lone run in the fourth inning, as Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) recorded an RBI with a double to left center field. Her hit scored freshman Ashley Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity), who hit a single over the short stop in shallow center field as the lead off.
On the defensive end, Pitt held off more runs for DePaul in the second inning, when bases were loaded with one out on the board. First, sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) fielded a ground ball and threw home for the force out. Then Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scrapped up a ground ball on the next at-bat and fired a pass to first to end the inning.
The Blue Demons scored in each of the first three innings off six hits, including a solo homer in the third.
Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) pitched the complete game, giving up seven hits and three earned runs.
