PITTSBURGH -
Quoting Pitt's Head Coach Agnus Berenato:
Opening Statement:
"Congratulations are in order to this team, this coaching staff and this group of seniors. All of them have such a belief in what we want to accomplish as a program and they've trusted that instinct through thick and thin. Words can't say what these seniors have meant to Pitt women's basketball. We're really going to miss having Malorie Winn, Karlyle Lim and Marcedes Walker around. But fortunately they've built a tradition and a legacy for us to grow on. Starting with these four as freshmen, we've built not only a team that's successful on the court, but also one that's instilled passion within the department and the community. It's a testament to where these seniors will go in life."
On playing her seniors for 10 straight minutes:
"I believe senior night is for the seniors. That's why I started them. That said, we raced out to such a big lead and everything was clicking so well I was hesitant to make a change. We'd jumped out to big leads before then subbed too soon in other games and had the lead slip away. Everything was going so well I didn't want to change."
On Pitt's defense:
"The first half was absolutely amazing. We came in a little devastated at what we'd done against South Florida after playing so well at home against West Virginia. We changed our defenses around a little bit tonight, throwing in some zone and some other looks, which we don't usually do. I thought that helped a lot. You can't play much better on defense than we did for the first 20 minutes."
On the importance of this game:
"I haven't been nervous about any game this year, but I was nervous about this one. Twenty wins was a goal we set for ourselves before the season began, and it was a milestone that I felt was important to achieve. We didn't have the best shoot-around, but we pulled it together for game time."
Quoting Pitt's Marcedes Walker:
On playing on senior night:
"It was very emotional at practice today. Everyone was so fired up and ready to go that I think we were even a little bit overanxious. I'm so glad we were able to perform like this and go out on such a high note. I can't say enough about what playing in this program has meant to me."
On rebuilding Pitt's program:
"I'm shocked at how fast it turned around for us. But Coach Berenato had a vision that she stuck to the whole time. When you recruit great players and have that, it's easy to start winning though, I guess."
Quoting Pitt's Karlyle Lim
On senior night:
"Early on in the year this night seems so far away. I think in a lot of ways it hasn't sunk in for me yet because there's still so much basketball yet to be played. I'm happy that I was able to be a part of building this team to a point where senior night isn't the end of the season and our work isn't done."
On helping to rebuild Pitt's program so quickly:
"Coming here I knew I was going to help rebuild something, but I didn't really have a schedule in terms of numbers or anything like that. Coach Berenato has a ton of enthusiasm and I think everything has flowed through that. When you bring that kind of passion to buckling down and doing the little things, everything comes together."
