PITTSBURGH -
Quoting Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato:
Opening Statement:
"Coach Mangina always has her team prepared to play, and it's always a tough battle for us. The last couple of times we played them it's come down to one possession so we knew we were in for a battle tonight. They really shot the ball well in the first half, and really made us focus on turning up our intensity in the second half. We did an excellent job rebounding the basketball today, which was a point of emphasis going in. I also thought our freshmen were terrific, which allowed us to present a balanced attack."
On the play of Chelsea Cole:
"Chelsea's a great player who's really adapted from becoming more than just a finesse player since she first got here. That's a tribute to her tremendous hard work and how coachable she is. It was a daunting task to come in against Rutgers like that, and it didn't go like she would have hoped. But I think she learned from the experience. She was really ready to go tonight and it showed."
Quoting Pitt's Shavonte Zellous:
On the significance of this game:
"This was a great win for us. Every time we play them it seems to come down to one possession, which is pretty much how it is for every Big East game these days. We didn't attack the basket as well as we wanted to in the first half, but we were able to adjust to that in the second half."
Quoting Pitt's Xenia Stewart:
On playing without Marcedes Walker:
"Marcedes is such a big part of what we do--rebounding, scoring, playing defense, she affects all of them. But it's a good test right now to see where we are as a team. Everybody has to step up and play a new role, and especially crash the boards."
Seton Hall Head Coach Phyllis Mangina
Opening Statements:
"Chelsea Cole took the opportunity and killed us on the boards. We didn't make our free throws. Pitt played good defense and took advantage of the match ups with our team. Their younger players really stepped up. They had a lot of weapons. We played a tough team tonight."
On Amber Harris scoring six points and seven rebounds:
"She has been playing hurt and she is a senior and she can't get hurt much more. We did not have Womak in the game to make up for what Harris could not do like Pitt had Cole. We had no big man like Pitt, we did not execute like we needed to."
"She is consistent with her performances and is doing a good job. We are proud of her. She is being put outside of her normal role without Womak in our line-up. There needs to be others that score."
On Seton Hall as a team:
"You can't win a game in this conference scoring just 44 points. You need to score as much as you can. We didn't make our free throws and you have to take advantage of the free points you can get."
On Pitt without Walker:
"They came out and played a 4-guard line-up. They went smaller, more athletic and quicker and it beat us. The post game changed without Walker and they used a lot of back screens to get the guards open underneath and you always have to be aware of Winn as a 3-point threat. With the players they had in tonight and Walker when she returns, they will be a great team. They did an outstanding job of rebounding."
