PITTSBURGH -
Senior guard Shavonte Zellous has been named the Big East Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones) has now been named a player of the week five times in her career, which ties the Pitt school record for honors in a career with Jennifer Bruce (five from 1983-85).
The senior scored a season and game-high 26 points in Pitt’s landmark win over No. 8 Maryland on Sunday. Pitt’s 29-point victory ties the Panthers’ record for scoring margin over a ranked team, and ranks No. 1 as a win over Pitt’s highest-ranked opponent in school history.
This season, Zellous has scored 20-plus points in every game but one and is second in the Big East and 10th in the nation in scoring at 21.4 points per game.
Zellous was named a unanimous preseason All-Big East team member and was named to numerous preseason All-America teams including the Lindy’s second team and Sporting News third team. Pitt’s leading scorer the last two years, Zellous is also a member of the preseason Wade Trophy watch list.
Pitt also jumped eight spots to No. 16 in the Associated Press poll, which was released Monday. The Panthers were No. 24 when they defeated No. 8 Maryland by 29 points. The USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll will be released on Tuesday.
Pitt will have the mid-week off for final exams and will resume play Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. against West Virginia State at the Petersen Events Center.
