PITTSBURGH -
Senior guard Shavonte Zellous has been named the Big East Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones) has now been named a player of the week six times in her career, which breaks the Pitt school record for honors in a career, previously held by Jennifer Bruce (five from 1983-85).
She had an outstanding week as she averaged an astounding 29.7 points per game in three contests. The honor was solidified with a 42-point performance on the road at No. 20 Florida for her career high. The point total was also the most ever scored against Florida in the school’s history.
Against the Gators, Zellous was 13 of 24 (.542) from the field, 13 of 14 (.929) from the foul line and 3 of 4 (.750) from three point range. Earlier in the week, Zellous totaled 21 points at Florida A&M and 26 points against Wagner. On the week in addition to her 29.7 points per game, she averaged 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the free throw line.
This season, Zellous has scored 20-plus points in every game but two and leads the Big East and is ninth in the nation in scoring at 22.6 points per game.
The senior was also recently named to the prestigious Naismith Trophy watch list, which is given to the nation’s top player, and named as the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award candidate. The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award is given annually to a senior based on the “Four C’s” of classroom, character, community and competition.
Zellous has already been named to the preseason Wade Trophy and Wooden Award watch lists and was named a unanimous first team All-Big East preseason honoree.
No. 19-ranked Pitt will resume play after the holiday break on Dec. 30 for a 7 p.m. game against Western Kentucky at the Petersen Events Center.
