Men's Soccer Loses to Providence 3-0

Providence, R.I.—The Panthers lost to the Friars 3-0 this afternoon in Providence, R.I. The loss drops Pitt’s record to 7-7-3 overall and 3-6-2 in Big East play. The Friars improve to 8-6-3 overall and 5-5-1 in Big East play.
The match was tied 0-0 until the 76th minute when Providence’s forward Alex Redding collected a pass from Timothy Ritter and scored from five yards out. It took only 16 seconds for Providence to score their second goal, a header by Andrew Sousa on a cross from Timothy Ritter. Providence added another goal to ensure their win in the 88th minute when Timothy Ritter’s shot deflected of the goalie and went into the net. Andrew Sousa provided the assist on that goal.
Both goalkeepers for Pitt saw playing time in this game, each playing a half. Senior Jordan Marks made both of Pitt’s saves in the match, while Providence’s goalie made three saves and allowed zero goals in 90 minutes of action.
Even with the loss Pitt will be in the Big East Tournament. Pitt ensured a spot yesterday night when the University of Connecticut beat Seton Hall. Both Pitt and Seton Hall were playing to for the final spot in the Blue Division. Prior to Seton Hall’s match yesterday they trailed the Panthers by one point in the standings and needed a win to have a chance to make the tournament. With Seton Hall’s loss yesterday the Panthers will be in the tournament for the first time since 2006.
Next up for the Panthers will be the first round of the Big East Tournament. The team they will be playing is still being determined. The game will be held on Wednesday, November 5.
