Moses Shatters Blocking Record

PITTSBURGH—Senior Jessica Moses shatters the career block assists record with six assisted stuffs during the Pitt women’s volleyball team’s 3-1 loss to Connecticut at Fitzgerald Field House, this evening. The Panthers slipped to 14-9 on the season and 6-2 in Big East play with scores of 25-19, 23-25, 26-28 and 23-25.
Recording seven totals blocks and six block assists, Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) eclipsed the 1996 record of 386 career block assists, that was set by Jennie Driscoli (1993-96). Boasting 389 career block assists to date, Moses also improved to second on the all-time total block list with 444.
Moses leads the squad with 101 blocks, as Pitt once again out-blocked its opponent 14-4, tonight. The Panthers hold a 224.5-160.5 advantage over other teams this season.
Moses chipped in 11 kills in the match, while junior Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) also recorded seven blocks and added five kills. Dooley recorded three solo stuffs at the net and boasts a team-high 17 on the year.
Leading the Panthers with 12 kills apiece were senior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield) and sophomore Amy Town (Orillia, Ont./Orillia). Campbell also collected nine digs.
In the first set of the match Campbell’s ace gave Pitt a 12-9 lead. A few plays later, Pitt led 16-13 after Dooley recorded her first kill of the match with a powerful put away on a back set from freshman Allyson Hodnik (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Hodnik tallied 34 assists in the contest.
Pitt would win the next three of five points before forcing a Connecticut timeout. Following the talk, Hodnik and Moses combined on the Panthers’ first block of the game.
Moses recorded a set-high four kills, as Pitt took a 1-0 lead in the match at 25-19. She would later tally four blocks in the second set, to take ownership of the block assist record.
Tied 1-1 in the match, freshman Tara Rohall (South Park, Pa./South Park) tied the third set at 24 with her third ace of the season. That ace forced a Connecticut timeout, as Pitt used a 6-3 run to knot the set. However, the Huskies were the first to score back-to-back points, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
After three sets, Pitt was out-blocking UConn, 14-3.
Despite the fact that the Panthers recorded 16 kills and posted a .406 hitting clip in the final set of the match, the Huskies would once again outlast Pitt in the final points and earn the 3-1 victory with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
Pitt hosts St. John’s on Sunday at 2 p.m., at Fitzgerald Field House.
