SOUTH BEND, Ind.--Notre Dame defeated the Panthers 4-1 Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana.
The loss drops Pitt to 6-5-2 overall and 2-4-1 in Big East play. Notre Dame improves to 8-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Big East play.
Notre Dame came into tonight's game ranked No. 15 in the nation and proved to be too much for the Panthers.
Pitt took an early 1-0 lead when Jack Traynor of Notre Dame kicked the ball into his own net. Pitt would not score again in the game and Notre Dame scored four consecutive times. Matt Besler, Dave Donohue, Bright Dike and Brendan King all had goals for the Fighting Irish.
This marks the first match the Panthers have lost by more than one goal. Their previous four loses have all been 1-0.
Pitt's defense which usually plays a good game did not today, giving up four goals. In the Big East Pitt ranks fifth in goals allowed (0.58 per game) and in goals against average (0.55).
The Irish outshot Pitt 16-9 in the game and had four more shots on goal.
The Panther's return home Saturday, October 18 for senior recognition day and will play Georgetown University at Founders Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
