INDIANOLA, Pa.--The No. 25 ranked Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Pitt men's soccer team 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Founders Field. The loss drops Pitt to 6-6-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Big East play. Georgetown improves to 8-3-3 overall and 3-2-3 in Big East play.
Georgetown scored the games only goal in the first half when Peter Grasso placed the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. Scott Larrabee was credited with the assist after providing a crossing pass.
Pitt had their best chance to tie the game in the 73rd minute when Adam Monteverde shot the ball at the goal, but Georgetown goalkeeper Matthew Brutto made a diving save.
The Panthers were in the game for all 90 minutes thanks to an outstanding performance by senior Jordan Marks. On senior recognition day, Marks totaled a career high 14 saves including a number of diving stops. His most impressive saves came in the 65th minute, where he made two diving stops in four seconds. Georgetown had a number of chances to increase its lead (having 12 corner kicks in the game), but Marks' terrific play kept the game close. His 14 saves gives him the most saves in a game for 2008 in the Big East, passing Neal Kitson of St. Johns who had 11.
In the match Pitt was outshot 21 to four and in shots on goal Georgetown had 15 to Pitt's four.
The Panthers next game will be against Seton Hall on October 25 in South Orange, N.J. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
