PITTSBURGH--On September 8 while the Pitt football team was readying itself to play Grambling State at Heinz Field, the Panthers' women's softball team was also in preparation mode. They were preparing games and activities for "Panther Zone," a pre-football game meeting place held at PNC Park that continues to grow in popularity.
Sponsored by Pitt Student Affairs, the Pitt Program Council, Pitt Student Life and the Pitt Athletic Department, the Panther Zone offers all Pitt students a place to go prior to home football games. The Panther Zone features free food, a DJ, games and prizes, including a drawing for free sideline passes that allow the winner to see that day's football game right from the field!
Students and fans that attended gained a new appreciation for softball by taking part in activities that included softball-style pitching through a hoop. It was enjoyable for both the attending students and the Panther Zone hosts.
"Despite the rain, we had a ton of fun," said Pitt softball player Jessica Dignon. "Some of us organized some games while others walked around the Clemente Bridge interacting with the students and encouraging them to come check out the Panther Zone."
The Panther Zone is free with a Pitt Student ID. It opens three hours prior to kickoff for every home football game. To enter the Panther Zone, enter through the Clemente Bridge at the entrance to PNC Park.
