PITTSBURGH--The Pitt softball team will begin practice for its fall season on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Panthers' first fall ball game will be on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Penn State. The fall schedule will also include the RMU Invitational, which Pitt won last year.
This season, the team adds six freshmen to its 12 returning lettermen. The newcomers include Ashley Amistade, Cory Berliner, Alicia Broudy, Mollie Illenberger, Alyssa O'Connell, and Reba Tutt.
Returning for her senior year is Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who earned her second consecutive all-conference selection after leading the team in batting average (.311), hits (52), runs (33) and doubles (13) last season.
Dignon tied the single-season record for doubles and ended the year ranked 33rd nationally on the NCAA's `hardest to strikeout' list.
Last year, the Panthers finished the season with a 23-35 record after a loss to USF in the first round of the Big East Championships. During the final Big East weekend of the 2007 season, Pitt earned four consecutive, eight-run victories for the first time in school history.
Additionally, graduate Sheena Hellon set three individual stolen base records and ranked 25th nationally.
