MOON, PA--Errors cost Panthers, as Pitt's softball team falls 5-4 in game two of its doubleheader against Robert Morris, this afternoon, at the North Athletic Complex. The Panthers dropped to 23-34 on the season, while the Colonials improved to 16-22 on the year.
As a team, Pitt committed five errors in the contest, which led to two unearned runs, including the game winner.
The game began with the Panthers jumping on top as senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) and junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded back-to-back RBI hits in the third inning for Pitt.
First, Scarf flied out to center field for the second out, allowing senior Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) to tag from third. Next, Dignon tallied Pitt's first hit of the game with a double to center field for a RBI.
Junior Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) then recorded another hit, as she singled to left field and tallied a RBI when Dignon scored. The final run of the inning came when sophomore Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) hit a hard shot to the third baseman and was overthrown at first, allowing Mihalik to score. Card then went to second and was overthrown again at third, but was called out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
The Colonials then tied the game in the fourth with a two-RBI bomb to center field and an unearned run. Robert Morris got on the board first with a run off two hits in the opening inning.
RMU won the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs on the board.
Pitt's defense held off runs in the fourth inning as senior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) entered the game with two runners in scoring position, one out and a 3-2 count on the Colonial that already hit two home runs on the day. Bostick's first pitch struck out the Robert Morris batter, swinging, and she got the next batter to ground out to freshman Alex Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) to get out of the inning.
In the seventh, Pitt has a chance to take the lead when senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) recorded a two-out single and stole second base. However Hellon was one of four Panthers left stranded in the game.
Bostick (8-8) took the loss, giving up one hit in 3.1 innings.
The Panthers now await their fate in the Big East tournament seeding.
