PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team (20-20) fell behind 4-2 in the fifth inning and could not mount a comeback, dropping a 9-7 game to Ohio (17-26) Wednesday night at Trees Field.
"Today's game was characteristic of our season; two steps forward, and one step back," Pitt Head Coach Joe Jordano said. "I have to give credit to Ohio. They swung the bat well, pitched well and took care of the ball. They really capitalized on the opportunities they had."
Sean Conley (JR/Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) hit 1 for 5, driving in three out of Pitt's seven runs on the night. Mike Wood (FR/Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) suffered the loss for the Panthers, giving up four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work, falling to 1-1 on the year.
Ohio jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added another in the third for the 2-0 lead. Pitt tied the game at two with one-run innings in the third and fourth.
Conley drove in his first run of the night reaching base on an error by the pitcher, scoring Danny Lopez (FR/Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) from second. In the fourth inning, Seth Button (SR/Elk Lake, Pa./Gloucester College) reached on a double to left center and was brought home on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats responded in the fifth with two runs, taking the 4-2 lead and not relinquishing the remainder of the game.
Morgan Kielty (SO/Burlington, Ont./Burlington Central) drove in Pitt's third run of the night with a sacrifice fly to center field, sending home Nick Mullins (JR/Brick, N.J./Brookdale CC) from third.
The sixth inning was productive for both teams as each scored four runs. Lopez drove in the first run on a groundout, bringing home Peter Parise (SR/Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) from third. Conley drove in the next two runs on a double down the left field line and Brian Muldowney (SO/West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) drove in the final run of the inning on an error by the third baseman.
At the end of the sixth, Pitt was down 8-7. The Bobcats added another run in the ninth on a solo home run to left field by Jared Willis for the 9-7 victory.
Pitt returns to action Saturday, May 5 at 4 p.m. in a doubleheader at Georgetown. The three-game Big East series will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Hoyas.
