PITTSBURGH--Pitt's senior shortstop Sheena Hellon was named to the Big East weekly honor roll, after she led the softball team to two conference wins this past weekend. This is the second honor of the season from the league's officials this year.
"Sheena is a great competitor and makes a lot happen for us on offense," said Head Coach Michelle Phalen. "She has good power (at bat) and is also a very aggressive base runner. She did a great job this weekend and we are counting on her to continue hitting the ball hard in our final Big East weekend against Villanova and Rutgers."
Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) posted her first Big East honors of the season after posting the most productive batting stats for the Panthers. In the four league games, Hellon drove in seven runs, recorded six hits, scored three runs and tallied three doubles.
She also blasted her fourth homer of the season against St. John's and posted a 1.167 slugging percentage in the Seton Hall twinbill. Hellon recorded the highest on-base percentage of the week and added another stolen base to her school record (56).
Her 23 stolen bases on the season tie her second-best mark from last season on the single-season steals list. She needs just two more steals this season to own the single-season record. Moving up on other career record lists, Hellon ranks second in runs (90) and hits (170) and is third overall in RBIs (88).
Pitt is still in the hunt for a Big East Championship bid and hosts its final regular-season conference weekend with doubleheaders against Villanova and Rutgers on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, respectively.
