PITTSBURGH--First-inning grand slam digs hole for Panthers, as Pitt's softball team dropped game two of its doubleheader against USF, 4-0, this afternoon at Trees Field. Pitt falls to 16-27 on the season and 2-9 in the conference, while the Bulls improved to 33-19 on the year and 5-3 in the Big East.
Just like in game one, USF loaded the bases and attacked quickly. The Bull's first inning grand slam sealed the game, as Pitt only gave up four hits the rest of the game.
Freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) pitched the complete game, striking out eight batters and allowing seven hits.
Pitt's first hit of the game was a lead-off double to right center field from sophomore Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/ Florida International) in the second inning.
Later in the game, both junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Card got on base in the bottom of the fourth, but were stranded in scoring positions.
Senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) gave the Panthers another scoring opportunity with a lead-off single in the sixth. Hellon moved to second on a sacrifice hit and stole her team-leading 22nd base of the season to advance to third. However, Hellon and Dignon, who was walked in the inning, would be left on base.
Pitt left five runners on base in the game, while Card was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Pitt hosts a doubleheader against Louisville on Sunday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at Trees Field.
