PITTSBURGH - Pitt senior center Marcedes Walker has been named to the prestigious Naismith Trophy watch list as one of the top 50 basketball players in the country. Walker was selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors - a collection of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country.
Walker (Philadelphia, Pa./University City) currently averages 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds a game this season and is on her way to becoming just the second player in Pitt history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Walker currently sits at third in the Big East in rebounding (9.7 rpg) and leads the league in double-doubles this season with five in nine games.
The preseason All-Big East selection has also been named to the Wooden Award and the State Farm Wade Trophy watch lists this season.
The Naismith Trophy is an annual award which honors the national player of the year in men's and women's college basketball. The preseason list is compiled by considering last season's performances, as well as expectations for the 2007-08 season. The list will be trimmed to 30 in January with the finalists announced in March and the winner awarded at the Final Four in Tampa, Fla., in April.
Walker was also named to the list last season as a junior. There are 27 seniors, 18 juniors and five sophomores currently on the list.
