STATE COLLEGE, Pa.--Pitt's softball team opened the 2007 fall ball season with a doubleheader loss at Penn State, where it dropped both contests, 4-0 and 5-1, due to costly errors.
Several newcomers saw action for the Panthers, including freshmen pitchers Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Co./Rocky Mountain) and Alyssa O'Connell (Turnersville, N.J./Camden Catholic) who both displayed impressive performances in the team's opener.
Berliner started the first game, allowing two singles in four innings with two strikeouts, while O'Connell started the second game and recorded two strikeouts.
Consistent in pitching, sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Az./Sunnyslope High School) pitched two innings of relief in game one for the Panthers, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts.
Pitching two innings of relief in the second game, junior Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) struck out one batter and gave up one hit.
Defensive errors on the part of the Panthers led directly to six of the Nittany Lions total runs, but Pitt got a chance to see different members of the team at new positions.
Seeing action at third base was sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy), while freshmen Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) and Alicia Broudy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) played short stop and first base, respectively. Junior Sam Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) and senior Kelly Stiles (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) also stepped up and switched off on the catching duties.
Pitt continues fall action on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the RMU Invitational. The Panthers face Gannon at 12 p.m., followed by California (PA) at 4 p.m. and Robert Morris at 8 p.m.
