LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Pitt jumped out to a quick lead, but could not maintain the momentum as the No. 23 Panther women's basketball team (15-4, 3-3 Big East) fell to No. 17 Louisville 72-59 Wednesday night at Freedom Hall.
"We came out and had a lot of energy to start the game," head coach Agnus Berenato said. "But it dropped off when we had to sub and Louisville is a great team and they exposed that. I thought Sylvie Tafen was great off the bench, but we needed more from the rest of our bench and we just didn't get it.
"On the other hand, with about 12 minutes left we were down by 20 points and we could have folded it up and gone home and we didn't. We continued to fight and I am proud of that."
Sophomore Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones) led the team with 22 points and added five rebounds. Zellous hit 10 of the Panthers 11 free throws on the night and hit two three-pointers on the night. Xenia Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added 12 points and a team-high five assists and guard Karlyle Lim (Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill) added 11 points and four rebounds.
Pitt turned the ball over 18 times and Louisville capitalized on 24 points off of those turnovers. The Panthers shot 43.1 percent from the field on 22 of 51 shooting, while Louisville hit 28 of 61 for 45.9 percent.
The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 start in the first half, but the Cardinals put together a 7-0 run of their own to bring the game to 12-10. Louisville took its first lead of the game at 17-16 and extended that lead to 12 at 41-29. At the half, the Cardinals led 41-32 and scored 17 points off of nine Pitt turnovers.
In the second, Louisville steadily increased its lead to 20 at 60-40 on a free throw by Toni Slaughter. The Panthers fought back to pull to within 12 at 68-56, but they could not get closer as the Cardinals went on to the 13-point 72-59 victory.
Louisville's Angel McCoughtry and Jazz Covington led the team each with double-doubles including 18 points and 15 rebounds for McCoughtry and 17 points and 11 rebounds from Covington.
Pitt continues its road trip Saturday, Jan. 27 at Seton Hall for a 2 p.m. meeting. The game will be broadcast live on www.PittsburghPanthers.com as a part of All Access or locally on the radio at Fox Sports Radio 970 AM with Greg Linnelli and Mike Clark calling the action.
